Ground anchoring at Govan shipyard

To prepare for the manufacture of a new fleet of naval destroyers, BAE systems had to convert the existing slip way at their Govan yard in Glasgow into a dry dock.

To counter act the uplift forces that would be created when the slipway was de-watered, Albion Drilling Group was appointed by main contractor, Farrans Construction Ltd, to install anti-floatation anchors. The anchors were installed to depths of up to 48.0m to withstand loads varying up to 550kN.

Technical Details:

  • Anti-floatation anchors installed to depth of 48m
  • Varying loads up to 550kN
  • Ground Anchor Types:  Dywidag GEWI DCP (Double Corrosion Protected)
  • Casing System: Boart Longyear
  • Rig Types: Atlas Copco Mustang 9H5                                          Boart Longyear Deltabase 100
